Optimum Experiences provides Duke of Edinburgh participants the opportunity to endeavour upon a range of journeys across all Award levels. Experiences are available in Bushwalking, Canoeing and Mountain Biking, or any combination of the three!
Our qualified and experienced instructors will equip all participants with the skills and equipment necessary to be successful, with learning opportunities available in preparation training days and practice expeditions. This allows students to get a taste for the outdoors whilst developing the skills required to complete their journey with confidence.

Along the way, you will not only learn what it takes to survive in the natural environment, but also about your true potential and what it takes to be a part of a team!

Optimum Experiences offers a range of products to suit your Duke of Edinburgh needs. Open Journeys are regularly organised for any individual on our pre-prepared trips, perfect for anyone that has missed a school or group trip. Group/School Journeys are specially catered for larger organisations in which we provide the safety and award assessment for the Adventurous Journey component. In the case of a privately organised trip, Optimum Experiences also offers the hire of a fully trained Award Leader, with the necessary training, assessment and first aid qualifications.

OPEN JOURNEYS – TRIP INCLUSIONS:

  • 2, 3 or 4 day Adventurous Journey (Bushwalking, Canoeing, Mountain Biking, or a combination) for participants throughout the Fitzroy Falls/ Morton National Park region as a practice or qualifying journey for Duke of Edinburgh participants
  • Pre-trip training for students, including appropriate instruction, learning materials and assessment useful for Duke of Edinburgh journeys, delivered at your location
  • Qualified outdoor education guides with Duke of Edinburgh Award Leader training, Working with Children checks, remote first aid qualifications and a wilderness first aid kit.
  • Hire-able gear including packs, cooking systems and fuel, fly and ground sheet or tent
  • Camping gear and food for supporting teachers or guardians
  • Water drops and Hygiene and wash up kits for each group
  • Comprehensive risk assessments and emergency procedures completed prior to the expedition and made available to the school and supporting staff
  • 24 hour on call support and appropriate communication devices

SCHOOL/GROUP JOURNEYS – TRIP INCLUSIONS:

  • All of the above inclusions for Open Journeys are available for our School and Group trips, plus:
  • Pre-trip planning workshops delivered at your school
  • Journeys  that can be run in conjunction with your school camp at a single location (Fitzroy Falls or Coolendell)

 

TRIP EXCLUSIONS:

  • SERVICE, PHYSICAL RECREATION and SKILLS components of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Optimum Experiences ONLY offers the Adventurous Journey section in Practice, Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards
  • Food or equipment for students (equipment such as trangias, hiking packs and tents are available for hire)
  • Travel to/ from the venue. However, Optimum will suggest and assist in the coordination of any travel requirements for students (train station located 20 minutes from site with free bus shuttle to Fitzroy Falls available)

PRE-TRIP PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP

Before embarking on their Adventurous Journey, students will take part in a skills workshop which aims to develop the knowledge and skills required for students to be successful and independent in their journey. This workshop will be run by Optimum staff at a time and location of your choice, and will address the following content areas.

  • NAVIGATION/ ROUTE PLANNING
  • Students determine a set of grid reference points within their journey using maps provided, and plan their journey based on terrain, distance, and estimated travel time.
  • TEAM BUILDING
  • Students participate in initiative activities designed to encourage teamwork, communication, and problem solving. These activities are used to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the team, which can then be discussed and developed.
  • FIRST AID
  • Students will gain essential knowledge and skills to identify and respond to common illnesses and injuries procured on expeditions.
  • EQUIPMENT
  • Students will gain an understanding of essential equipment for both individuals and the group.
  • MENU PLANNING
  • Instruction in the types of food necessary to maintain energy levels throughout the journey.
